How to evaluate what's happening without losing your head in the attempt

There's a moment when you turn on the news and something inside tightens. You're not sure whether what you're seeing is real, exaggerated, a smokescreen — or all three at once. That moment is exactly the starting point of this text.

I want to propose a process. Not a truth. A process for looking at the world with more clarity, more honesty — and less reactivity.

El problema de fondo: ¿qué es real? The underlying problem: what is real?

From my position as a spectator of everything that's happening — with my biases, my lack of information, my limited capacity to connect and to know — I constantly ask myself: what percentage of what I see is the real thing?

Events happen that shake the whole world. Events that personally help me understand the reality of the different participants. But I also wonder: is there any way to know whether this is reality, or whether it's all one big smokescreen? Are events being created to distract the world from what may be harder to keep under control today?

Es difícil saberlo. Asumir que sí lo sabemos sería arrogante.

It's hard to know. To assume we do know would be arrogant.

If we can't know everything, we can at least be more rigorous with what we receive. For that there's a simple but powerful tool: DATA.

It's not just about having information — it's about evaluating it. Rating it. Questioning it. Before reacting to anything you see or hear, it's worth asking yourself:

Define el IT. Nómbralo con precisión.

And before all of that: what exactly am I evaluating? Define the IT. Name it precisely.

El ejemplo que no puedo ignorarThe example I can't ignore

Recently I heard a right-wing commentator in the United States speak in an aggressive tone — almost racist, I'd say. My immediate reaction was to put her in a little box of "crazy people" and never listen to her again.

Completamente.

Why does it bother me so much? Why does it affect me? If I strip the intensity and the anger from her delivery — if I imagine her saying the same thing but open to dialogue — does anything change for me? Yes. Completely.

So the problem isn't what she says. It's her level of anger and her inability to consider her own part in the matter. When there's hate, there's no dialogue. There's a fight to prove that what one thinks is the right thing.

I've lived both sides of that. I've been on the side that receives the aggression — and it's terrible. And I've also been on the other side, the one that feels strong, that knows everything, that is right. Both are traps.

Why would those fighting to feel strong and to win do things differently? And why would those of us who are watching do things differently?

Only if we want things out there to be different.

¿Para lograr qué IT?

Social media has given many people a platform. But many of us are still afraid to use it — or simply don't care enough. Some of us think it's not the best way. And here the question appears again: the best way for what? To achieve what IT?

El mundo que quieroThe world I want

Quiero un mundo con menos odio. Menos abuso. Menos "el poder tiene razón." Más actos de bondad. Más gente buena en el mundo. Quiero paz.

I want a world with less hate. Less abuse. Less "power is right." More acts of kindness. More good people in the world. I want peace. I want safety in the streets. I want people to defend what they believe without needing a bulletproof vest.

If someone likes Spanish, let's learn Spanish. If they want Chinese, let's learn Chinese. Let's embrace our differences — and our similarities too. In the end we are all human. The Little Prince was right.

Why are we fighting to prove the other one wrong? Maybe we're looking at our problems from the wrong angle.

Las preguntas que no podemos evitarThe questions we can't avoid

Do you think being white means being good? That being brown or black means being less so? Are skin color, sexual preference, language — the highest human values?

If the whole world were white, blue-eyed and tall — would that make it a WHAT kind of world?

What kind of world do you want? Do you think all white, English-speaking people share the same values? Where do values come from? Are yours better because you're white?

Is it sustainable to think in isolation? Do you have the right to decide who belongs to a country and who doesn't? Maybe your constitution says so. But who wrote the constitutions? Humans. Perfect humans who understood today's world and what we need?

I believe we have the responsibility to think, to feel, and to let DATA help us evaluate and consider the best options for humanity today.

The problem is that we're all tangled up in fights — right and left, white, brown, black — instead of simply thinking clearly and holding a high value for humanity.

No sé cómo termina esto. Pero no se ve bien.

I don't know how this ends. But it doesn't look good.

Definamos el IT.

Let's define the IT. Let's solve it. And let's enjoy the journey as the human race — not as the white race, nor the brown, nor any other.

Tool Box — Para evaluar lo que ves sin perder la cabezaTool Box — To evaluate what you see without losing your head

What exactly am I evaluating? Write it down in one objective sentence, with no emotional charge.

Is it a fact or an opinion? What noise can I remove to see the core?

¿Qué tan sólida es esta información? ¿Por qué me importa? ¿Cómo me afecta? Si es verdad, ¿qué significa? Si es falsa, ¿qué significa?

How solid is this information? Why does it matter to me? How does it affect me? If it's true, what does it mean? If it's false, what does it mean?

What does my reaction tell me about myself? Am I responding to the content — or to the intensity of whoever says it?

What is it that I really want to solve, understand or change? Name it. Without that, it's all noise.
