About the fear that paralyzes, the judgment that comes from every direction, and what you learn when the world doesn't work the way you were told.

I'm not writing this because I've figured it all out. I'm writing it because I wish someone had told me sooner.

There was a moment when I stopped recognizing myself.

It wasn't dramatic. It wasn't a specific day. It was the accumulation of waking up afraid without knowing exactly of what. Of checking my phone before opening my eyes and already feeling the weight before reading anything. Of seeing my dad with a look I'd never seen on him — not of sadness, but of something harder: of not knowing how to protect me.

Knowing I hadn't done anything wrong was the only thing I knew for certain. And I learned something no one teaches you: that not having done anything wrong protects you from nothing. That power, when it moves, doesn't ask who you are. It just flattens everything. And you're left there, in the middle, trying to understand what happened.

Eso es lo que más me costó. No el daño en sí. Sino no entender qué estaba pasando. No saber cómo protegerme, a mí y a mi familia.

That's what cost me the most. Not the harm itself. But not understanding what was happening. Not knowing how to protect myself, and my family. How to keep us safe. Not having the language or the map to navigate something so big.

The fear that paralyzes isn't the fear of the danger you see. It's the fear of what you can't see.

Not the imagined one — the real one. The one that arrived through messages, through comments, through conversations someone relayed to you without asking permission. People read and believed. It became a topic. An opinion. A verdict.

What no one tells you is that judgment hurts differently depending on who it comes from. Those who condemn you without knowing you hurt one way. But those who defend you — "I know you and I don't believe anything I read" — those crack you open inside too. Because the moment someone says that, you realize how exposed you are. How real all of it is. And the vulnerability arrives from both sides at the same time.

I stopped going to the gym. Not because I physically couldn't. But because I felt too raw to be in a place where someone could see me. Where someone could recognize me. Where I'd have to exist in public.

Yo no.

I had tools. I knew, in the abstract, how to work with fear, how to manage the mind, how to process. But in that state I couldn't access them. It was like holding the key in my hand and not being able to open the door. The knowledge was there. I wasn't.

No one talks about that. That a crisis doesn't take your resources away — it disconnects you from them.

I remember going to the pharmacy to buy electrolytes.

It wasn't a craving. It was a physical need. Prolonged fear has a taste — literally. It's the taste of adrenaline living in your body with no way out. A friend explained it to me: buy electrolytes, they help balance the pH. I'd never had that experience. I'd never needed to understand that fear isn't just an emotion — it's a chemistry.

Reacciona igual. Se desgasta igual.

And when that chemistry drags on, the body starts to collect the bill. Insomnia comes, inflammation, the illnesses that appear "out of nowhere." The body doesn't distinguish between a real danger and one that lives in your head. It reacts the same. It wears down the same.

What I understood later — not in that moment, but much later — is that when you don't have tools to change that chemistry from the inside, the instinct is to look for something outside that will. Whatever works. Whatever stops that taste.

That's where many addictions begin. Not from weakness. From the desperation of a body that needs to get out of the state it's in and doesn't know how.

Lo que sí sabesWhat you do know

At some point I had to ask myself something that felt almost ridiculous given everything that was happening: what do I know about myself that no one can take from me?

Not what the world was saying. Not what the headlines were building. Not the version circulating in conversations I wasn't invited to. But what I knew — with certainty, from within — was true about me.

Esa pregunta me salvó. No de la situación. De mí misma.

That question saved me. Not from the situation. From myself.

There's a huge difference between identity and reputation. Reputation is what others build of you — and in a world with social media, the press, and viral conversations, that construction can drift completely away from who you are. Identity is what you know you are, even when no one else sees it.

Holding on to that isn't denial. It's the only firm ground there is when everything else is shifting.

What do you know about yourself that no one can take from you?

There's no course, no book, no conversation that tells you how the world works when something big falls on you. And the worst part isn't that you don't know what to do. The worst part is that you don't even know what questions to ask.

I knew I was right. I knew the truth was on my side. And I assumed — because that's how we were taught — that it was enough. That the truth defends itself. That systems exist to protect those who did nothing.

That was the slowest lesson: the truth doesn't move systems on its own. It needs a channel, it needs timing, it needs the right people. Power doesn't yield because you're right. It yields when being right enters at the right angle, at the right moment, with enough weight behind it.

That's not cynical. It's information. And the difference between seeing it as injustice and seeing it as information is enormous. Injustice paralyzes. Information gives you something to work with.

No tengo un final ordenado para esto. Y creo que ese es el punto.

I don't have a tidy ending for this. And I think that's the point.

Clarity didn't arrive one day as a revelation. It arrived slowly, in layers, sometimes two steps forward and one back. It arrived in conversations with people who told me truths I didn't want to hear. In moments of stillness where I could finally access the tools I'd always had but that fear had blocked.

If you're in something like this right now — a crisis you didn't ask for, a harm you didn't deserve, a situation you don't fully understand — this isn't a manual. There is no manual.

It's just someone who was there, telling you that what you feel has a name. That fear has chemistry. That disconnecting from your tools doesn't mean you lost them. That identity outlives reputation when you know clearly who you are.

And that not knowing how the world works isn't a failing of yours. It's simply the starting point.

What you do from there — that is yours.
